German Federal Economics Minister and Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel has called the energy efficiency a "sleeping giant". The energy efficiency should be the most important pillar of the energy revolution in Germany, Gabriel said at the 5th Congress of the German Energy Efficiency organized by the Energy Agency in Berlin.

The energy efficiency had been considered too long as "inconspicuous sister of the beautiful sister" renewable energies, he said. Already in 2008, during a visit to Gladbeck, Gabriel had been informed as Federal Environment Minister on the heat exchangers of Klingenburg company.

After the reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), it would be high time to raise the profile of energy efficiency in focus, Gabriel said. The federal government would soon present a "National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency" (NAPE).

The action plan would involve before market-based approaches. It would be crucial, what measures are most effective, Gabriel said.
